Jiang Weiping and Gu Kailai.A Controversial "Close Relationship" That Sparked Long-Lasting Enmity
Jiang Weiping, the journalist imprisoned for exposing corruption involving Bo Xilai and his wife, has repeatedly described his relationship with Gu Kailai in overseas interviews and writings as a key personal motive behind his ongoing criticism of the Bo family. According to Jiang, this "close interaction," which began as a professional acquaintance, escalated due to internal tensions within the powerful Bo household and ultimately contributed to his long-term persecution. While these claims rely primarily on Jiang's own recollections and overseas media interviews, they remain highly controversial in Chinese-language circles: Was it merely casual acquaintance, or did it cross personal boundaries and ignite deep grudges? Although lacking official documentation or independent corroboration, the story reflects the intertwined world of power, private life, and media in 1980s1990s Dalian officialdom.
Early Encounters: From Xinhua Reporter to Social Acquaintance
As a Xinhua News Agency reporter stationed in Dalian, Jiang Weiping first met Bo Xilai during Bo's tenure as deputy county party secretary in Jin County (later renamed Jinzhou District). Jiang frequently covered grassroots stories, and the two gradually developed a working acquaintance. Jiang was known for his straightforward personality and social skills, making him active in local journalism circles. Around 1988, when Bo was promoted to director of the Dalian Municipal Propaganda Department, Gu Kailai officially moved from Beijing to Dalian. A Peking University law graduate who had previously worked in the capital, Gu had lived apart from her husband for years due to their separate careers. Once in Dalian, her outgoing personality, eloquence, and fluent English quickly helped her integrate into local social networks. As a journalist, Jiang naturally came into contact with her.
At first, their interactions were purely professional and social: whenever Gu visited Dalian or attended local events, Jiang, as an acquaintance, often invited her to meals and conversations about news, urban development, legal issues, and more. Gu occasionally returned the favor. The two maintained a friendly, familiar rapport. Jiang later admitted in interviews that he developed an affection for Gu, finding her knowledgeable, charismatic, and engaging.
Internal Family Tensions: Rumors and Revenge Motives
Bo Xilai was well aware of the situation. By then established in Dalian's political scene, he was nonetheless surrounded by persistent private-life rumorsthe most prominent being his alleged affair with Zhang Weijie, the young and attractive host of Dalian TV's *Sun Rain* program. News of their close relationship circulated widely in local media and official circles. Gu Kailai was deeply upset and reportedly published an article under the pseudonym "Wang Hong" in a local magazine, indirectly attacking Zhang and contributing to her eventual transfer out of the station and gradual withdrawal from Dalian's public eye. Bo knew of his wife's jealousy but did not address it publicly.
Against this backdrop of marital strain, Gu Kailai's interactions with Jiang Weiping became more frequent. Jiang later recalled that Gu may have responded more positively to his invitations out of resentment toward her husband's infidelity and a desire for some form of retaliation. Their meetings and conversations increased. As a culturally inclined man, Jiang naturally felt drawn to Gua woman of background, capability, and sophistication. While such interactions were not uncommon in the era's environment, they clearly moved beyond ordinary acquaintance into a noticeably closer realm.
The Turning Point: Hotel Rumor and Complete Break
A critical incident shattered the delicate balance. According to Jiang's own account, an ordinary worker in the municipal party committee office witnessed Gu Kailai and Jiang Weiping entering a hotel one after the other and staying for an extended period without emerging promptly. The story quickly spread in small circles, giving rise to rumors that "Jiang Weiping slept with Bo Xilai's third wife" and "Jiang Weiping put a green hat on Bo Xilai." At the peak of his career ascent, Bo Xilai was extremely sensitive to such gossip. Rather than confronting Jiang directly, he sent his driver to deliver warnings and threats, with unmistakably intimidating language. From that point on, Jiang and Bo's relationship collapsed completely.
Jiang has since maintained that this personal grudge became a major emotional driver for his later exposés on Bo Xilai's corruption during his time in Jinzhou and Dalian. In post-release overseas interviews, Jiang detailed his interactions with Gu Kailai and how Bo vented his anger on him. He stressed that it was not merely idle gossipthere was indeed some "ambiguous" involvement between him and Gu. In one notable remark, he said, "Whether I slept with Gu Kailai or not is for you to guess." Yet he framed Bo's retaliation as a microcosm of internal contradictions in a power family: Bo's extramarital affairs prompted Gu's reciprocal behavior, ultimately ensnaring an innocent third party.
Unverified Controversy: Recollections vs. Logical Inference
These accounts come mainly from Jiang Weiping's personal recollections and overseas media reports, with no official archives or independent multi-source verification. In the political climate of the time, such private rumors were routinely suppressed by power, making open confirmation difficult. Logically, however, the Bo couple had already established a "husband holds power, wife collects wealth" pattern in Dalian. Any scandal threatening family stability or career image would be dealt with swiftly and ruthlessly. Jiang and Gu's "close interactions" were likely just one facet of the Bo family's mutual suspicion and revenge dynamics, yet they became the emotional trigger for Jiang's whistleblowing.
This episode illuminates the complexities of Dalian's official circles in the 1980s1990s: princeling cadres sent down for grooming, the entanglement of power and private life, journalists drawn into the web, ultimately resulting in lasting enmity. Jiang Weiping's fate was merely that of one individual crushed by power. Of course, imprisonment was not inevitablethe turning point may well have been the moment he first met Gu Kailai.
These old stories remind us that celebrity narratives often contain embellishments and should be approached with rational scrutiny. What do you think of this rumored "affair"? Personal grudge or a microcosm of power struggles? Feel free to comment with your views or similar experiences, and share this article if it sparks discussion.
