An outpouring of support and condolences has flooded social media platforms to mourn the death of 17-year-old Dylan from Keswick.By Julie Edghill photo
The tight-knit Keswick community is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of Dylan Edghill, a 17-year-old who died by suicide. The devastating news has sent shock waves through the community, leaving friends, family, and neighbours grappling with disbelief.

Dylan's mother, Julie Edghill, in a heartfelt plea for support on GoFundMe, shared the profound pain of losing her beloved son and the anguish of grappling with the sudden financial burden of his funeral costs.

She described Dylan as the epitome of light and joy, a cherished son, friend, and young man who touched the lives of everyone he encountered.

“For anyone that knew Dylan, he was the light in every room,” said the mother.

“He just returned from Japan with school for March break and the kids said that he made the trip. Even ate a tarantula.”

Despite his outward happiness, Dylan had struggled with his mental health for years, ultimately succumbing to feelings of purposelessness, his mother said.

“He felt he didn’t have a purpose,” said Julie. “The day he passed away was the first day of suicide awareness week. I gave out suicide awareness pins to everyone at the funeral.”

“To me, he knew what that week was and wanted to make sure that there was more awareness. If he can save one person’s life, that was his purpose. I will do everything I can to show he had purpose even after he passed.”

Dylan was known for his intelligence, charm, and infectious sense of humour. At school, Dylan was deeply involved in drama, captivating audiences with his talent on stage. The news of his passing has left his peers, teachers, and the entire school community devastated.

In the wake of this tragedy, an outpouring of support and condolences has flooded social media platforms, as residents band together to mourn the loss of one of their own.

“The support from friends, neighbours, family, Keswick High School, people I have never met before is so overwhelming, especially since I lost my father the day of Dylan’s funeral,” said Julie. “They were meant to be there together.”

As the community mourns, there is a collective call for increased awareness and support for mental health issues, as well as a reminder of the importance of reaching out for help and support when needed.

“He was waiting for a referral for a psychiatrist for so long and when we found one, it seemed like he didn’t care about what the issues were and just wanted to give him meds,” said Julie. “By then it was too late.”

“Mental health is a huge issue with kids and it takes so long to get help,” said the mother. “Someone needs to fix this before more kids suffer. It’s not acceptable.”

“This serves as a reminder to check in with those who seem like they are doing OK,” Annica Smith commented on social media.

“Some people are fighting battles nobody else knows about, so be kind!”
