It’s been a soggy April thus far, with places like Toronto and Barrie having already surpassed their average rainfall for the month, even though we’re just at the halfway point — and with another major system due to hit southern Ontario midweek.
“A Colorado low is going to meet with a low from the prairies and the whole province is going to be seeing precipitation Wednesday afternoon into Thursday,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Trudy Kidd in a Monday interview.
Pearson airport, she said, has already recorded 93.9 mm of rain in April, surpassing its monthly average of 78 mm (based on data from 1991 to 2020).
“And for Barrie, this is a more staggering number. Barrie has recorded 126.9 mm (of rainfall) so far (in April) and typically this is 62.2 mm,” she said.
Hamilton, though, hasn’t hit its April average yet.
“Hamilton so far has received 60.7 mm (of rain), and a typical April would see 79.1 mm,” she said, adding both the Hamilton and Barrie numbers are based on data taken from 1981 to 2010.
How much more precipitation the midweek Colorado low will unleash still remains to be determined, she said.
“As usual, narrowing it down to how much (rainfall total) this far out is less reliable,” she said, adding most models are predicting in the 25-to-30-mm range, although one model has a more modest 15 mm total while another one has up to 40 mm.
“So 40 mm is the worst case scenario right now.”
The forecast at this point, she said, has rain for most of the province except for northwestern Ontario, which will see snow.
“So that’s from Wednesday (afternoon) and then it starts tapering off Thursday, so I would say like a 36-hour amount,” she said.
The start to the work week has been sunny with today’s high out of Pearson airport in Mississauga expected to hit the mid teens later this afternoon — with a similar forecast for Tuesday.
Wednesday is forecasted to only reach 8 C as the Colorado low makes its appearance with Thursday at 13 C and Friday at 15 C.
The Colorado low storm system will leave in its wake slightly cooler temperatures, just into the double digits, for the weekend.
