Police say a suspect in an alleged robbery in Clarington is believed to have caused a multi-vehicle crash leading to fatalities on Highway 401 in Whitby.
At 9:47 p.m. on Monday, April 29, Durham police confirmed there was a 'pursuit' following an alleged robbery in Clarington.
In a post on X, police said there were fatalities but not the number of victims.
"The suspect proceeded onto the 401 highway in the opposite direction, resulting in a multi-vehicle collision with fatalities," according to the post on the official Durham Regional Police X account.

Ontario Provincial Police closed a section of Highway 401 in Whitby after the serious multi-vehicle crash around 8 p.m. Monday, April 29.
Several people have been injured, but there is no confirmation of the number of injured.
OPP posted on X, saying Hwy. 401 was closed in both directions between Lake Ridge Road and Brock Street South due to the crash.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area, and use Hwy. 2 as an alternate route. Police directed vehicles to back up on the highway and take the Lakeridge Road off ramp.
Traffic camera pictures from the crash show at least two tractor-trailers were involved.
