Some parts of southern Ontario could be seeing their warmest day of the year, approaching the mid-20s and sparking the first humidex alert, along with the threat of thunderstorms.

The messy, warm weather is forecasted to be followed by a very brief cool-down for Tuesday (high of 17 C, out of Pearson) before some nice mid-week weather.

Pearson airport in Mississauga, meanwhile, has a high forecasted of 23 C today (Monday) but with the humidex reaching 26 C.

“The warmest day so far has been April 28, we got 22.1 C (at Pearson),” said Trudy Kidd, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. “It’s not anything too crazy. We’re getting into mid-May now and the typical temperature is around 19 C, so it’s not too far off (normal).

As to whether it’s the first humidex alert of the season, she said the alerts are basically automatically generated “any time the 24-hour forecast has a humidex of 25 C or more.” And the real temperature has to be 20 C or more.

Whether that has already happened so far this year, she explained “it’s not one of those numbers that we keep track of.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was (the first humidex reading),” she said, but added that one possibly might have been generated on the previous warmest day on April 28.

Meanwhile, the chance of showers amps up after 3 p.m. with the risk of thunderstorms accompanying them until around midnight.

It is forecasted to leave in its wake a cooler, cloudy day with the odd shower, before giving way Wednesday and Thursday to sun and 20-plus temperatures.

Another low-pressure system looming on the horizon at this point is forecasted to bring a few sprinkles on Friday before giving way to more sun and 20-plus weather for the long weekend.

“As long as that low-pressure system moves through on Friday and keeps moving, then we’ll at least be OK, it looks, for southern Ontario: It looks to be a nice (long) weekend.”
