It’s official, it turned out to be the rainiest April for a swathe of Ontario that includes the GTA and Barrie. And just a bit warmer than normal.
Barrie, Pearson airport break rainfall recordsBarrie “smashed their record” for rainfall in April with 146.7 millimetres (mm) of rain, which beat the old record of 129.2 mm set back in 1991,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson in a May 1 interview, adding that the Barrie data is taken from nearby Shanty Bay, which has observations dating back to 1973.
Meanwhile, at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, which has observations dating back to the late '30s, Coulson said the new record of 135.3 mm of rain “beats the previous record of 133.4 mm set back in 1992.”
Rainiest month ever for Barrie, Pearson?So what’s the rainiest month ever at those two locations?
Many people might be surprised to find out that the answer for Pearson airport is not even a spring or a summer month.
“I had a colleague of mine who was gracious enough to crunch the numbers,” said Coulson. “So for Toronto, the record for the wettest month ever — any month any year — was Hurricane Hazel, October 1954.
“Because of Hazel’s contributions to the month, the total rainfall for October 1954 was 213.9 mm at Pearson.”
For Shanty Bay, Coulson said the wettest month ever at that site was September 1986, with 263 mm reported.
Snow not included!There is a small caveat. The above figures don’t include snow, so it’s not total precipitation.
Last month still No. 1 for Barrie, even with snowfall includedNow if you do include snow for total precipitation, then Barrie has still set a record.
When snow is added (converted to rain for measurement purposes), Coulson said April’s 146.7 mm of rain is augmented by 7.2 mm of snow for a total precipitation of 153.9 mm.
What does change for Barrie, though, he said, is second place, which was 146.1 mm total precipitation in 2009.
Last month drops to No. 2 for Pearson, with snowfall includedFor Toronto, however, while last month’s 135.3 mm of rain marked the rainiest April on record at Pearson, it drops to second place if you add up total precipitation.
For Toronto, a negligible amount of snow last month only pushes total precipitation up to 135.5 mm overall.
April 2018 holds record for Pearson for total precipitationThat’s only good enough for second place in terms of total precipitation for April, behind 2018, when only 105.2 mm of rain was recorded, but it was augmented by 10.4 cm of snow for a combined 150.6 mm of total precipitation.
Rainy weather spread north from TorontoCoulson said April’s elevated precipitation amounts, in general, targeted Toronto northwards through Lake Simcoe up along the eastern shores of Georgian Bay and up into the Sudbury-North Bay area.
“So that was one part of the province that really did seem to get quite notable amounts of precipitation and in some cases, as for Shanty Bay and Toronto, record setting,” summed up Coulson
Warmer than normalOn the heels of our warmest meteorological winter for much of southern Ontario, Coulson said April was also a bit warmer than normal.
“Much of southwestern Ontario, including up into the Greater Toronto Area, was a little bit warmer than normal. The actual mean temperature for April at Pearson (airport) was 8.5 C, the long-term average mean temperature for April is 7.1 C.
“And a number of the other sites (across southern Ontario) I looked at were running anywhere from 1 to 1.5 degrees above normal. So a little warmer than normal.”
