Humber Bay Park West in Toronto filled up with lots of people during the Victoria Day long weekend last year. This year’s Victoria Day long weekend is now upon us, and the weather is looking great for much of southern Ontario and beyond — just like in this photo!By Andrew Francis Wallace Toronto Star file photo
Southern Ontario and cottage country, your Victoria Day holiday weekend is looking fabulous — that is, if you like warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.

The threat of showers and thunderstorms that are widespread throughout Ontario today (Friday) and lingering overnight are forecasted to move out on Saturday, replaced by a high pressure system that will give us lots of sun on Sunday and Monday.

Check out these three-day (Saturday/Sunday/Monday) high temperature forecasts from Environment Canada for communities right across Ontario:

[*]Muskoka: 25/28/28[*]Windsor: 24/28/29[*]Mississauga: 21/27/28[*]Guelph: 22/27/28[*]Hamilton: 20/26/27[*]Ottawa: 25/28/29[*]Bancroft: 24/27/29[*]Peterborough: 23/28/29[*]North Bay: 25/25/26Ironically, some of the more southern locales have cooler forecasts: both Niagara Falls and St. Catharines have a comparatively chilly forecast of 19 C on Saturday, 18 C on Sunday and 22 C on Monday.

Gerald Cheng, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, explained in a Friday afternoon interview that big lakes, which are “still pretty cool from the winter,” can affect temperatures of nearby communities “depending on local wind flow.”

“Niagara is sitting beside two lakes, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario,” he explained.

One thing to note, advised Cheng, is the dropping temperatures after the sun goes down. In other words, city folks won’t have to turn on the air conditioning and cottage dwellers should have nice cool sleeping conditions.

“So that’s something to be mindful of during this time of the year when we get not cool nights, but you know, not as warm,” said Cheng.

Here’s just an example of some of the evening lows Saturday, Sunday and Monday

[*]Niagara Falls: 14/14/17[*]Mississauga: 13/13/17[*]North Bay: 14/10/14[*]Ottawa: 12/16/16Even though a lot of places in Ontario will have warm temperatures, Cheng said that at this point, pop-up thunderstorms don’t look to be a factor.

“For now, we don’t see the threat in southern Ontario,” he said, quickly adding that it’s always best to keep abreast of updated forecasts.
